While I am writing this thread, I'm extruding ABS into the shape of a dodecahedron with the Cupcake CNC. I can't wait until more people can do this.
awesome. i'm looking for a d20 model for you to use. no luck though.
I sent you a PM with a location of an STL file of a d20 I had Blender make for me— I've seen RepRappers get away with some pretty extreme overhangs so it might be worth a try unmodified!
Hey guys, just an idea, looking at the basic design, there are 3 open sides on the cupcake. Now, this is largely due to the need for ventilation I'm assuming, or is access during operations a big requirement?
The reason i comment on this is because a more enclosed design has always been one of my ideas to make the reprap (and it's derivatives like the cupcake) more acceptable to the consumer. The open sides make people feel ill at ease. If possible, I recomment that you look at replacing two of those sides with simply a grating(even one with huge 2 inch holes), it would have a minimal effect on ventilation, but would make the public feel much more at ease around the machine given it allows a mental idea of it as a single piece. They would be relatively easy to laser cut as well. One side is still freely accesable for object removal, and the other sides might get somehow poppable on or off for maintenance,
I say this partially based on experiance, my girlfriend has a fear of robots. The reprap simply freaks her out and she doesn't like being near it. I think alot of this is the exposure of things like the metal struts etc that distresses the non-geek. An enclosed machine covering on a car(the hood) or computer(case) makes people feel less overwhelmed by the whole thing and would make the artist types (who I think will buy a full assembled machine in droves, one artist friend of mine who doesn't really like tech is already is constantly asking me for reprap updates cos she wants things printed) more likely to accept it.
Ok, I've voted with my wallet and placed an order. Half the battle (for me at least) in any DI(From Scratch)Y is sourcing and acquiring all the pieces I need to build a project.
Looking forward to receiving my kit and assisting with the documentation process!
Same here. Hope to help as much as I can; This will be my biggest DIY project so far :)
If I still had my old job I'm very sure I would have ordered the instant I saw this thing.
As it is… it may have to wait a few months :|
