I have just recently added a HBP on my cupcake with Gen4 electronics and MK6+ extruder. After some initial prints with this I realize that this is a change I should have done quite some time ago! That being said I am still learning how to use the HBP in my prints and I have some questions related to what I am observing thus far.
On first testing the setup I found extruder and HBP temps to hit their targets and remain quite stable over time. I read many of the post on inmproving inistal stickness and have used 100% acetone to clean the Kapton as may have advise. I tried initial prints at 110°C on the HBP with ABS but found that the ABS is not sticking. I found that to get a print to actually work I have had to set HBP temps to 130° and really make sure the print head is up against the table to what would say is zero clearance.
My first concern is whether the HBP is actually getting to the reported temperature. If I set the HBP to 120°C and then measure the surface temp with an IR thermometer I typically see a reading about 10-15°C lower than the reported temperature. Does anyone have a preferred way of confirming the HBP temp is as reported? Are there any ways that this is calibrated (i.e. adjusted in software)?
Second question is typically how high above the build surface should the nozzle be before I start the print? It feels as though the print head is way to close to the surface and I fear I am building up back presssure in the toolhead.
