Slice Formats

There are several existing formats for representing slices.

Common Layer Interface format

The Common Layer Interface format describes a stack of layers. ASCII and binary versions are available. The ASCII version permits comments, which could be used to represent annotations.

SLiCe format

The .SLC format was developed by 3D Systems and is still used by Stratasys. It's even more sketchily documented than CLI.
Turlif Vilbrandt has more information about this and can help us out with more spec and examples.
